Don’t mistake security for confirmation

Aug 17, 2021 | Faith, Family, Featured, Life

I remember entering the workforce after college, and being so happy to find something secure. Something that I could do, that would pay my bills, and provide health insurance for me and my family. I went into the world looking for security, not necessarily considering the other aspects of the job.

Finding something secure isn’t a bad thing. It’s a great thing! Having peace of mind and spirit is something worth looking for and investing in. But like all things, moderation is important. If we choose to live in security over living in faith, then something is wrong. We have no reason to trust, no reason to hope, and no reason to need Jesus.

I truly believe that granting security is one of the many tools satan uses to keep God’s people from moving. We assume that because something guarantees our needs are met, that it is from God. But God never intended for us to stand still when he called us to move forward. He never intended for us to use security as an excuse to take control away from Him, and give back to ourselves.

If you want to grow in your faith, then you have to let go of the idea that life will be an easy road. A road filled with stable hillsides and zero disasters. Life is an adventure and living that adventure means climbing the things that don’t seem stable, and trusting that you won’t fall. Life is walking on water when logic tells you that you will sink.

Do not let the fear of instability keep you from the things God has for you. Be different. Choose to leave the cycle of survival and thrive. Sure, it’ll be scary. Trusting that your needs will be taken care of, that’s scary too. But when you make that choice, you find freedom you didn’t know existed.

How do you know you’re following the right path?

  • PRAY – Ask for wisdom and guidance
  • TRUST – Trust your gut and the feelings you encounter as you think through possibilities
  • PURSUE – Follow where God is leading, and allow Him to close doors and open them to guide you on your way.

Have you ever chosen instability over comfort?

Like most people, I generally connect that good things come from God and therefore are affirmations of a right decision. James 1:17 says, ” every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows”. Yet, I am learning that because something is good does not necessarily make it perfect or holy, both of which are reflections of God’s attributes and workings.

Thanks for the comment Nat! Agreed! I think it’s more about knowing that security doesn’t equal good, perfect or holy. Staying in a relationship because it is stable, doesn’t mean that it is good right? It also doesn’t mean that it’s God’s plan. But also, something can be good and not God’s plan. For instance I got a job offer a few months ago for a job at a local Christian company. It was a good offer and a good company, but I don’t believe it was God’s plan for me. Even though I have fears, especially with all the changes at work right now, I know that I’m supposed to be in my current job. Basically fear doesn’t make something bad, or against the will of God, but sometimes satan just wants to scare us from embracing what God has planned, even though it’s scary.

This is so true. In my particular situation, I have seen God provide both security and confirmation in recent days. I am keenly aware of His direction, and provision for me. God has placed desires in our hearts to pursue for His glory. I admit that sometimes I am very fearful to step out, but God always provides light for the next step I am to take when I am to take it. God bless you!
